The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is the beginning of Christian life and the first sacrament of Christian initiation. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church, and share in the Church’s mission.
The essential rite of Baptism is immersion in water, or the pouring of water on the candidate’s head, while invoking the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The grace of Baptism includes the forgiveness of original sin and all personal sins, birth into new life, and incorporation into the Church, the Body of Christ. Baptism also gives a lasting spiritual mark, often called a 'character', which is why it is not repeated.
Baptism has been given to children since the earliest times. Children are baptised in the faith of the Church, and Christian life then develops through ongoing formation and participation in the Church’s worship and community.
