The Sacrament of the Eucharist
The Eucharist is the sacrament in which the Church celebrates and receives the Lord’s sacrifice. At the Last Supper, Jesus instituted the Eucharistic sacrifice of his Body and Blood as the memorial of his death and resurrection, entrusted to the Church.
The Church teaches that the Eucharist completes Christian initiation and is “the source and summit of the Christian life”, because all the sacraments and the Church’s work are ordered towards it.
The richness of this sacrament is reflected in the names the Church gives it. It is called “Eucharist” (thanksgiving), “the Lord’s Supper”, “the Breaking of Bread”, “the Holy Sacrifice”, “Holy Communion”, and “Holy Mass”, each pointing to a distinct aspect of what is celebrated and received.
